The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, has launched tree-planting exercise across the Niger Delta region to mitigate the impact of climate change

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in collaboration with the Foundation for Sustainable Development Options (FOSDO), has launched a large-scale tree-planting campaign in Delta State. The initiative was part of a broader effort to mitigate the effects of climate change across the Niger Delta region. The campaign, coordinated by the NDDC’s Delta State office in Warri and FOSDO, is scheduled  to cover all nine states of the Niger Delta: Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo and Rivers.

At a one-day sensitisation workshop and tree-planting event held at the DY Event Centre in Edjeba, organisers noted that only Edo and Ondo states remain to be covered. Following the tree-planting exercise, which was part of a four-day event last week, the Director of the NDDC, Delta State office, Onoriode Omo-Udoyo, described the project as more than a one-off public relations event. He characterised it as a practical demonstration of the commission’s long-term commitment to environmental protection and ecosystem preservation. He emphasised the critical role trees play in absorbing carbon dioxide and improving local air and water quality, underlining the commission’s intention to continue raising awareness in communities across the Niger Delta. Omo-Udoyo added that the NDDC will take its message to churches, markets and schools to ensure citizens understand their role in protecting the environment.
