President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new DG of the National Council on Climate Change.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change.
She takes over from Dr. Nkiruka Madueke, the Council’s pioneer Director-General, who was appointed in June 2024 and is credited with laying the groundwork for the agency’s institutional development.
Majekodunmi, a seasoned climate finance expert and environmental lawyer, brings over 17 years of experience to the role.
Prior to her new role, she served as the Financial Adviser to the Council.
Her appointment was confirmed in a statement on Thursday, by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who stated that the appointment aligns with Tinubu’s broader climate agenda.
The statement read, “Majekodunmi’s appointment reaffirms the Tinubu administration’s commitment to tackling climate change as both an environmental necessity and a driver of sustainable economic growth, national security, and social inclusion.”
The President thanked the outgoing DG, Madueke, “for her dedicated service and strong foundation for the Council’s continued growth.”
The National Council on Climate Change, established under the Climate Change Act, 2021, serves as Nigeria’s apex body for coordinating climate action, implementing national policies, overseeing the carbon budget, and mobilising green finance.
