Fresh oil spills has been detected in Kpean Community in Khana Local Government Area in Rivers State
A new oil spill incident has been reported in Kpean Community in the Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State. The new spill has sparked concerns over the increasing frequency of environmental pollution in Ogoniland, and the Niger Delta in general.
Local residents confirmed that the spill was discovered by community members who observed crude contamination in the area. However, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has yet to issue an official statement, and no joint investigative team has been deployed to determine the cause or extent of the spill.
Fyneface Dunamene, Executive Director of the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre, expressed alarm over the recurring oil spills in the region, warning that continued pollution threatens to derail the ongoing Ogoni environmental cleanup efforts as well as government plans to resume oil exploration in the area.
Dunamene urged the relevant authorities to take immediate action to contain the spill and prevent further environmental degradation, emphasizing the urgency of protecting communities already burdened by decades of oil-related damage.
